FEC invited H. E. Mr. Hans Dietmar Schweisgut, Ambassador of the European Union to Japan for an Executive Luncheon Meeting at the Imperial Hotel Tokyo on May 16. EU, with more than 16 trillion GDP, is a large economic bloc and important trading partner of Japan. Within the area, EU is also faced with many challenges in industry, employment, regional unbalance, immigrant policy and the euro issue. FEC President Ken Matsuzawa made a welcome speech, “Ambassador Schweisgut used to be Austrian ambassador and minister in Japan prior to the EU ambassador. He has contributed for friendship and development of Japan-European and Japan-Austrian relations over many years. We expect Ambassador Schweisgut’s frank observation on the current situation and prospects of the EU and Japan relations.” Ambassador Schweisgut made a speech on “EU and Japan”, giving detailed explanation and expressing frank impressions on the EU and Japan relations and the future prospects of the EU. After the speech, the ambassador answered questions from the attendants about UK withdrawal from the EU and Turkey’s entry to the EU.
