FEC invited H. E. Mr. Tim Hitchens, Ambassador of the United Kingdom for an Executive Luncheon Meeting at the Hotel Chinzanso Tokyo on February 4. In Britain, there is a big argument on whether Britain should remain in EU. People are dissatisfied if EU is infringing on the sovereignty of UK judicial system and labor law system. UK prime minister Cameron has announced a referendum plan on whether to remain in EU by the end of 2017. It should be noted that the majority of the public opinion is also asking for a referendum. Mr. Hiromichi Fujita, Chairman of FEC Japan-Europe Cultural and Economic Exchange Committee, Executive Advisor of Toppan Printing Co., Ltd made a welcome speech, “Japan and the UK, located in the end of the east and west of the Eurasian Continent, have the 400 year history of exchange, and have developed a very good relations. Although EU seems to be functioning steadily in the security area of the region; the UK economy looks rather severe.”
Ambassador Hitchens talked frankly on the theme of “UK and EU”, referring to the Japan-UK history ,the recent UK trends and the current and prospects of Japan-UK relations. After the speech there were cordial questions and answers regarding Japan-China issues, female labor participation and so on.
